In keeping with club policy, additional terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
MacLean enters his fourth season as Assistant Coach with the Red Wings. A defending Stanley Cup Champion, MacLean will continue to assist Head Coach Mike Babcock and the newly appointed coaching staff. MacLean and Babcock have coached together since their first season in the NHL where they spent two seasons (2002-04) with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks.
A native of Nova Scotia, Paul and his wife have three children.

Bowman is Gone To Chi
Thursday 07-31-2008 1:12pm ET

The Chicago Blackhawks are naming legendary coach Scotty Bowman as a Senior Advisor, Hockey Operations on Thursday.

Ranking first among all NHL coaches in games coached (2,141), wins (1,244) and Stanley Cups (nine), Bowman is revered as an all-time great behind the bench.

Bowman, 75, was a head coach for thirty NHL seasons with the St. Louis Blues, Montreal Canadiens, Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings and has served as a consultant with the Red Wings since he retired after winning the 2002 Stanley Cup.

He'll join a talented young Blackhawks franchise that is led on the ice by reigning NHL Rookie of the Year Patrick Kane, as well as first-line centre Jonathan Toews, providing support to the front office team headed by President John McDonough and General Manager Dale Tallon.

Bowman's son Stan is an Assistant GM, Hockey Operations with the Blackhawks.

Wednesday 07-30-2008 12:09pm ET

New Wings Assst Coach
Monday 07-21-2008 3:47pm ET

The Sporting News's Craig Custance reports that the Detroit Red Wings have hired former Atlanta Thrashers assistant coach (and Wings alumnus) Brad McCrimmon to fill the assistant coaching spot left vacant by Todd McLellan's departure for San Jose:

July 21, The Sporting News: The Detroit Red Wings have hired Brad McCrimmon as an assistant coach on Mike Babcock's staff, filling the vacancy created when Todd McLellan left to take the head job in San Jose.

McCrimmon was the associate coach for the Atlanta Thrashers last season and a finalist for the head job with the Thrashers. He told the Sporting News he has agreed to terms to join the Red Wings and expects to sign the deal when he goes to Detroit next week.

"I was there for three years as a player and loved it," said McCrimmon, who played for the Red Wings from 1990-93. "Now it's a great opportunity to go back. It's a good situation in the sense of the city, the team and what they've been doing there for a long time."

A Couple Free Agents Re-Signed
Monday 07-21-2008 6:43am ET

M-Live is reporting that the Red Wings have brought back a couple players.  Here is the link to the story.

The Wings have apparently re-signed goaltender Jimmy Howard and defenseman Jonathan Ericsson. There is no official word from the club yet, and team officials couldn't be reached on Sunday, but the NHL Players Association's Web site lists both players as signed for next season. Howard's salary is listed at $600,000, Ericsson's at $550,000. Ericsson was poised to sign a three-year, $2.7 million contract, according to a Swedish newspaper.

The Wings have at least three more players they will re-sign shortly: forward Valtteri Filppula and defensemen Chris Chelios and Kyle Quincey. They also have made contract offers to forwards Darren McCarty and Aaron Downey.

2008-2009 Schedule Released
Thursday 07-17-2008 2:36pm ET
Here's the official announcemnt from the Detroit Red Wings website . . . .

For the first time in three seasons, the defending Stanley Cup champion Red Wings will play at least one game against every team in the league in 2008-09.

In the NHL schedule released on Thursday, the Red Wings will play each of their three Central Division rivals (Chicago, Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis) three times at home and three times on the road. The Wings will play another 40 games inside the Western Conference with two home and two road games against the remaining 10 Western teams.

The remaining 18 games involve at least one game each against all 15 Eastern Conference teams. The Wings will face Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Atlanta each twice – both home and away.

The Wings will face the Penguins -- the team they beat to win their 11th Stanley Cup in franchise history – on Tuesday, November 11 at Joe Louis Arena, and on Sunday, February 8 at Pittsburgh’s Mellon Arena.

The Wings will open the season against Original Six rival Toronto on Thursday, October 9 when a championship banner ceremony is planned.

Besides the Maple Leafs and Penguins, the nine home games against Eastern rivals include meetings with the New York Rangers (Oct. 18), Atlanta (Oct. 24), New Jersey (Nov. 8), Montreal (Nov. 26), Buffalo (Jan. 10), Philadelphia (March 17), and the New York Islanders (March 27).

The 2008-09 schedule will feature five Friday games, eight Saturday games, and three Sunday games at Joe Louis Arena.  Last season, the Red Wings hosted eight Friday games, four Saturday games, and four Sunday games.

An obvious omission to the 2008-09 schedule is the traditional New Year’s Eve game that has been a regular staple in the Red Wings’ schedule since 1950. Instead, the Wings and Blackhawks will play a home-and-home series on Dec. 30 and Jan. 1. The New Year’s Day game will be the league’s second annual Winter Classic, an outdoor contest, which will be played at the 41,000-season Wrigley Field.

The Wings only have four home games in January with nine games on the road, including a season-long, six-game trip that begins in Dallas on Jan. 12 and finishes at Columbus on Jan. 27.

Last November, the NHL’s Board of Governors approved the new scheduling matrix, which ensures that each team plays every club at least one, either home or away.

The new format represents a change from a matrix approved by the Board for the 2005-06 season that called for four games (40 total) against each non-division conference opponent, eight games (32 total) against each in-division opponent and 10 inter-conference games.

Fans can still lock in to last year’s ticket prices by becoming a season-ticket holder prior to August 4.  For season ticket information, call the Red Wings Ticket Sales and Service Department at 313-396-7575.

* Winter Classic at Wrigley Field, Chicago
Finally An Announcement; Plus Part of Schedule Out
Thursday 07-17-2008 8:53am ET

It Official . . . .

The NHL has award the 2009 Winter Classic to the Chicago Blackhawks, who will play host to the Detroit Red Wings on January 1, 2009 at Wrigley Field.

Wrigley Field was chosen over early favorite Yankee Stadium.

Last season's Winter Classic between the Penguins and Sabres on January 1st drew an NHL record 71, 217 fans to Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo.

The meeting between the two clubs will be the 701st all time. No NHL opponents has played more regular season games against each other.

ALSO the Wings released patr of their schedule.  The rest comes out on Thursday.  Here's a break down from M-Live . . .

The Wings have announced that they will be hosting Toronto on Oct. 9 in their regular season opener. In addition to the outdoor game, the Wings also revealed that Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Atlanta are the three Eastern Conference teams they'll play both home and away. The other 12 they'll play just once, six home and six away. The schedule will be released tomorrow.

Here's part of the release:

"The Detroit Red Wings will raise the franchise's 11th Stanley Cup Championship banner on October 9 at Joe Louis Arena. Following the ceremony, the Wings will begin their defense of the 2008 Stanley Cup by hosting an Original Six-rival, the Toronto Maple Leafs at 7:00 pm.

In addition to the home-opener, four other Red Wings games were officially announced by the National Hockey League today including the Wings and Chicago Blackhawks facing off in the third regular-season outdoor game in League history on New Years Day 2009 at Chicago's Wrigley Field. The NHL also announced the three at-large games provided by this year's new scheduling system. The new format has Detroit facing all Eastern Conference foes at least once and three Eastern teams twice next season. Those three teams that will play a home-and-home series vs. Detroit are Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Atlanta.''

Some Prices Come Down
Wednesday 07-16-2008 8:26am ET

The Red Wings sent out a mailing Tuesday for season-ticket holders that includes a decrease in prices for about 1,900 seats.

Season-ticket holders must put a deposit down of at least 25% of the total cost for tickets by Aug. 4 to lock in seats at last season's prices.

The Wings hired a ticket inventory strategy company to help figure out what areas in Joe Louis Arena had not sold season tickets well in the past. As a result, the team lowered prices for some rows behind the nets from $54 to $44 and from $44 to $33.

Drake Retirement
Tuesday 07-15-2008 12:43pm ET
Red Wings forward Dallas Drake is expected to make an official retirement announcement during a 1 p.m. conference call today. Drake told the club a couple of weeks ago that he was leaning toward retirement and it should move on without him. The 16-year NHL veteran began his career with the Wings in 1992-93 and finished it in Detroit this past season by winning his first Stanley Cup
